I know I wasn't the only person who immediately thought of the 1980s when I heard this question; because in the quiz I took part in, both teams gave answers in that decade.
It was of course the Challenger that suffered a similar fate in 1986; and that (equally of course) was shortly after lift–off, and not on re–entry.
Still a bit of a sneaky question though! Any confusion could easily have been avoided by mentioning the Challenger in the question.
